How Marginful works out what you paid to ship each order.

Shipping cost is what you pay the carrier. It is separate from what the customer paid for shipping, which is part of net revenue as Shipping charged. Free shipping still has a cost.

Where the cost comes from

  1. The actual label cost from a connected shipping or fulfillment provider, when it reports one for the order.
  2. Your shipping rules: rules are checked by priority (lowest number first). The first active rule whose conditions all match the order sets the cost.
  3. Nothing: the order carries no shipping cost.

How a rule is calculated

Shipping cost = Base cost + Per extra item × (units − 1) + Per kg × weight

A rule can match on country, region, shipping method, carrier, warehouse, SKUs, order value, weight and quantity. Blank conditions match every order.

Example: a rule with a base cost of $6.00 and $1.50 per extra item gives $9.00 for an order of 3 units.

Orders without shipping

  • Orders cancelled before they were fulfilled carry no shipping cost.
  • Orders with only gift cards, services or items that do not need shipping carry no shipping cost.

3PL rate cards

If you use a 3PL, its rate card in Logistics can add a fuel surcharge to rule-based estimates, and replaces the flat fulfillment and packaging defaults.
