Partial-day proration
Why today's fixed costs and expenses count only for the part of the day that has passed.
On this page
Some costs build up with time, not with orders: rent, salaries, fixed custom costs and warehouse storage. Marginful counts them for the share of each day that has passed in your store's time zone.
- A day that is over counts in full.
- Today counts only its elapsed share.
- Days that have not started yet count nothing.
Example
Your rent is $3,000 a month, or $100 a day in a 30-day month. At 6:00 PM, 75% of today has passed, so today carries $75 of rent. At midnight it carries the full $100.
Without this, a report for "today" at 9:00 AM would carry a full day of rent against a few hours of sales, and today would look worse than it is.
What is prorated
| Cost | Prorated by the elapsed share of today |
|---|---|
| Monthly, quarterly and annual expenses | Yes |
| Fixed daily, weekly, monthly and annual custom costs | Yes |
| Warehouse storage | Yes |
| One-time expenses | No. The full amount lands on the start date |
| Costs tied to orders | No. They come with each order |
Comparisons
When you compare today with an earlier day, Marginful compares like with like: the earlier day is cut at the same elapsed share. A percentage change against a loss or a figure near zero is not shown, because it would not be meaningful.
