Each order carries the fee you paid to get paid. Marginful uses the most exact source it has:

  1. Marketplace fees reported by a sales channel at settlement, for example TikTok Shop.
  2. Real gateway fees from a connected Shopify Payments, PayPal or Stripe account. These are already net of fees returned on refunds.
  3. Your fee rules: the first active rule that matches the order's gateway, payment method, card brand, country and number of installments.

How a fee rule is calculated

Fee = Charged amount × percent + fixed fee

The charged amount is the order total minus anything paid with a gift card. A rule can also have tiers by charged amount; the first tier whose "up to" covers the amount is used.

Example: a rule of 2.9% + $0.30 on an order of $50.00 charged to a card gives a fee of $1.75.

Shopify's third-party transaction fee

On some Shopify plans, Shopify charges an extra fee when you do not use Shopify Payments. Set this percentage in Settings → Store & tax → Shopify third-party transaction fee. It is added to orders paid through other gateways. It never applies to orders from channels outside Shopify.

Fees on refunded orders

Some gateways return the processing fee when you refund. If yours does, turn on Payment processing fees are returned when an order is refunded. The estimated fee then shrinks in proportion to the amount refunded.

Fees not tied to an order

Payout fees, currency-conversion fees and account fees from a connected payment provider are applied to the day they were charged. They appear as Other payment fees on the P&L.

Orders whose payment was voided carry no estimated fee.
